Curriculum Overviews
At Clayesmore Prep School, our curriculum is carefully designed to inspire curiosity, challenge pupils academically and support every stage of their development. As children progress through the school, learning evolves from a nurturing, class-based environment to a more specialist and independent approach, preparing them confidently for senior school and beyond.
Across all year groups, pupils benefit from a broad and balanced curriculum that combines strong academic foundations with creative, practical and experiential learning opportunities. Specialist teaching, outdoor education, enrichment activities and the values of the Clayesmore Compass help pupils develop the knowledge, skills and personal qualities needed to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
Explore each stage of the Prep School curriculum below to discover how learning develops from Years 3 and 4 through to Year 8.
In Years 3 and 4, children begin their journey through the Prep School with a broad, engaging curriculum designed to build strong foundations in key skills while nurturing curiosity and confidence.
Learning is delivered primarily by a class teacher, ensuring consistency, strong relationships and close pastoral care. As a result, children feel secure and supported as they develop independence and a love of learning.
The curriculum focuses on core skills in English and Mathematics, alongside Science, Humanities, Languages, Creative Arts, Computing, PE and Outdoor Education. Lessons are practical, creative and interactive, encouraging children to explore ideas, ask questions and make connections across subjects.
As well as developing academic skills, pupils begin to build independence through structured prep and are introduced to specialist teaching in areas such as music, PE, computing and languages. Outdoor learning, trips and enrichment activities bring learning to life and help children develop confidence beyond the classroom.
At the heart of learning is the Clayesmore Compass — Communication, Consideration, Creativity and Courage — which helps pupils develop positive attitudes and strong personal foundations for future success.
In Years 5 and 6, pupils move into a more specialist teaching model while continuing to benefit from strong pastoral support through their tutor and form system.
This stage marks an important transition as pupils become more independent learners, developing confidence, responsibility and deeper academic understanding across all subjects.
The curriculum builds on strong foundations in English and Mathematics, while introducing greater depth and challenge in Science, Humanities, Languages, Computing and the Creative Arts. Pupils are encouraged to think more critically, work collaboratively and take greater ownership of their learning.
Specialist teaching becomes more frequent, and pupils benefit from a wide range of enrichment opportunities including outdoor education, fieldwork, performances and residential experiences.
Prep becomes a more structured part of learning, helping pupils develop organisation, time management and independent study skills.
The Clayesmore Compass continues to underpin all aspects of school life, supporting pupils in developing communication, creativity, courage and consideration as they prepare for the next stage of their education.
In Year 7, pupils enter Key Stage 3 learning while still within the supportive environment of the Prep School, ensuring a smooth and confident transition towards senior school education.
All subjects are taught by specialist teachers, allowing pupils to explore greater depth and complexity across the curriculum. Learning becomes more analytical and independent, with a strong focus on developing critical thinking, problem-solving and subject-specific skills.
The curriculum includes English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Languages, Computing, Creative Arts, PE and PSHRE, with increased emphasis on applying knowledge in more challenging and extended tasks.
Pupils are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning, manage their workload effectively and develop resilience and independence in preparation for future academic demands.
Enrichment continues through trips, performances, outdoor learning and leadership opportunities, helping pupils to broaden their experiences and build confidence.
In Year 8, pupils reach the final year of Prep School and are fully prepared for transition into senior school and GCSE study.
The curriculum is challenging, broad and academically ambitious, delivered by specialist teachers who encourage independence, depth of understanding and strong analytical thinking.
Pupils study a wide range of subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Languages, Computing, Creative Arts, PE and PSHRE. Learning focuses on applying knowledge, developing advanced skills and preparing for the expectations of senior school study.
There is a strong emphasis on independent learning, organisation and personal responsibility. Pupils are encouraged to think critically, reflect on their progress and take ownership of their academic development.
Enrichment plays an important role in Year 8, with leadership opportunities, trips, performances and outdoor experiences helping pupils build confidence and maturity.
