Years 3–6 – How We Learn

A Strong Foundation for Lifelong Learning

In Years 3–6, children develop the essential skills, knowledge and confidence that form the foundation of their future learning journey.

We focus on nurturing curiosity, building independence and ensuring every child feels secure, supported and inspired.

Learning Through Curiosity and Discovery

Our approach in the junior years is hands-on, engaging and creative. Pupils learn through:

  • Exploration and investigation
  • Practical and interactive activities
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving
  • Asking questions and developing ideas

Building Core Skills and Confidence

We place strong emphasis on developing:

  • Literacy and numeracy skills
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Organisation and independence
  • Confidence in learning and expression

Small class sizes allow teachers to know each child well and adapt learning to meet individual needs.

A Supportive and Structured Environment

In Years 3 and 4, children are primarily taught by their class teacher, providing consistency and strong pastoral care.

As they move into Years 5 and 6, they begin to experience specialist teaching while maintaining close support from their tutor and form system.

The Tutor System

Every child is supported by a dedicated tutor who plays a central role in their development and wellbeing.

Tutors:

  • Monitor academic progress
  • Provide guidance and encouragement
  • Offer pastoral support and friendship
  • Meet pupils daily to ensure they are supported and heard

This close relationship helps every child feel known, valued and supported.

Attitudes to Learning and the Clayesmore Compass

Our Clayesmore Compass underpins everything we do:

  • Communication
  • Consideration
  • Creativity
  • Courage

These values are actively taught and reinforced, helping children develop resilience, confidence and a positive mindset towards learning.

Enrichment and Outdoor Learning

Learning extends well beyond the classroom through:

  • Outdoor Education
  • Educational trips and workshops
  • Creative performances and productions
  • Themed enrichment weeks
  • Sport and physical activity

These experiences help bring learning to life in exciting and meaningful ways.

Developing Independence

As pupils progress through Years 3–6, they gradually develop:

  • Responsibility for their own learning
  • Strong organisational habits
  • Early study skills and prep routines
  • Confidence in tackling challenges independently
